138 Million Children Trapped in Child Labor: A Global Crisis Demanding Action

Child Right And Development Implementation Foundation Inc (CRADIF), a Non-Governmental Organization based in Nigeria has expresses deep concern over the alarming number of children engaged in child labor worldwide.

Mrs. Chioma Shamah, the Nigeria Country Director stated this recently when contacted in an online media chat organized by the NGO.
She quoted the recent United Nations report, which says that, “approximately 138 million children are trapped in child labor, with 54 million involved in hazardous work that threatens their health, safety, and development.”

“This crisis demands immediate attention and collective action from governments, civil society, and the private sector, she averred.

Speaking also on the issue, Dr. Immanuel Joshua Joshbriliem, CHRADIF Director of Research and Planning,
urged stakeholders to prioritize the elimination of child labor and invest in programs that support vulnerable children and families.

He highlighted on key area he considered must be given attention, which include,

  • Universal Education: Ensure access to quality education for all children, particularly in marginalized communities.
  • Social Protection: Implement social protection programs to reduce poverty and prevent families from relying on child labor.
  • Child Protection Systems: Strengthen child protection systems to identify and support children at risk of child labor.

“The persistence of child labor is a stark reminder of the work that remains to be done. We must act now to protect the rights and futures of millions of children worldwide. CRADIF is committed to working with governments, civil society, and communities to eliminate child labor and ensure that every child can thrive in a safe and nurturing environment”, stated the International President of CHRADIF, Most Rev’d Dr.Tony-voke Oforishe Sunday.

Tony-voke further calls on governments, civil society, and the private sector to join forces to address the root causes of child labor.

“Together, we can create a world where every child can enjoy their childhood, access quality education, and reach their full potential,” he reiterated.
